Almost a close pass

Just a quick video to show that drivers can be dissuaded from daft overtakes by holding your hand out with palm facing them. I'm not entirely sure where she was expecting me to go, especially as she was wanting to go in the far left lane!

It looked more like he went to overtake and didnt notice the traffic in the other slowing down so had to stop, more then you disuading the driver to overtaking close.
Just a quick oberservation though.

But I did disuade her, instead of squeezing past (which she was in the process of doing) I managed to 'encourage' her that, that would be a poor course of action.

I'm used to this sort of overtake approaching this junction, so I am always on the lookout for it. It's not the first time it happened and it won't be the last, you just have to keep your spidey sense about you! B)

Oh and I should add, there were bad cross winds there at the time. Drivers should be taking more care in those situations.....should!B)

I would of just moved further over and left out the hand signal, but thats me.
Ive had it happen to me many times, and ive just moved over and blocked them. But i suppose a hand signal will do.
What would you of done if you had a person in a big 4x4 behind you very close, and when you told them to back off, they told you you will die cycling like that, and when you told them to back off said something, pointed and showed you their fist? The driver was old and fat, and you were just in a queue at a red light in primary, and moved forward with the traffic, and the car infront didnt go through the light on amber so you had to wait.
What would you of done/said to this driver?

Good bit of defensive riding there mags. I think a lot of the time drivers don't really know what to do, so just choose an action, sometimes right sometimes wrong.

I have about a mile of country B-road that's not quite wide enough for secondary, and not suitable for primary, i flinch every time there's something approaching from front and behind and i'm in the pinch point.
Think i might try that one, cheers.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

It helps with "hoverers" - those folk who sit just off your back wheel dithering about whether to go past or not. (Tend to get them near pinch points, traffic islands and the like). A "please wait" signal removes the ambiguity for them as to what you'd prefer them to do (remember, most drivers won't be regular road cyclists themselves, and so often don't realise how close a pass is "needed" at these points in the road). Acknowledge the fact that they waited for you if possible.

With twats, it either doesn't work, or incenses them to the point of honking and waving their arms about, so the "please wait" signal is one to be careful with, ime.

In general, I reckon communicating more is better than communicating less, as a rule though.

Now you have the quick machine...just take the road.......

I don't have the issues you do, I just take my space - look back, signal, and take it - take's balls but it works in Manchester.... also helps to be moving at traffic speed (which I can see you are getting there on the speed machine)

Thats what i do, i dont bother with the hand signals of please wait. I just look behind and move out, or gradually move out. Ive often had people go to come past and had to brake hard because the central crossing is there and they have nowhere to go.
But thats just how it is around here, maybe worse where you are Magnatom

Strange feelings would stir within.... it would start with a throbbing feeling in magnatom's forehead, as if the very vessels in his skin were starting to pulse harder with anticipation at the impending event. Soon all of his vessels would be pulsing hard and rhythmically, setting a beat for the transformation that was about to take place. The distortions would start in his arms bending and twisting the very bones and muscles that held him together into a new shape, something more menacing...more powerful. His whole body would follow his arms lead contorting and twisting painfully whilst magnatom cried a cry that only a few special men and woman understand fully.

Before the very eyes of the pitiful driver, magnatom would soon complete his transformation, a transformation that would render all within sight of it helpless... helpless with awe at the sight of something amazing, something unstoppable, something until now only held in the dreams of men.

Magnatom had become........Captain Cameraman!:sad::eek::smile:
