aluminium fork steerers

a club mate of mine had a big off when his van nicholas carbon forks' aluminium steerer snapped this weekend. is this a common problem with alu fork steerers, or is it likely just to be a bad fork? i'm currently running a carbon fork with alu steerer, and want to know if it's safe to do so.

Not really a common problem, I'd say a bad fork....

Must be 100,000's or 1,000,000's of bikes with carbon forks with alloy steerers out there, you don't hear of them collapsing like this all the time.

Manufacturing fault, or damage from a previous crash ?
