Am I a soft touch or are my friends tight?

A friend of ours was followed out of a bar by the waiter in Chicago after he refused to leave a tip - they had a barney out in the street where my friend basically said that he would be happy to tip if the service was worthy, which it wasn't, "now p*ss off!"

We were bad-mouthed in Florida when we only left 10% (the rate is 15% in that state). The waitress spilt another diners soup on the floor behind my daughter's chair and got all the food in the wrong order - she was lucky to get 10% - it was the last night and I had a $100 note and the bill came to $90 so I left the note. She was really giving it some in the kitchen as we left!

As for BK's point- I totally agree that chucking in £30 was reasonable.

I agree it is really tight. Also makes it much more difficult to fathom out! £120 on a MONTHLY haircut? Ye Gods where do these people get the money from? Every six months a trim, costing £7.00 (I give her a tip of £3.00 because she's nice). I bet that woman goes and has her nails done regularly too. My mum would say that they have too much money.

haha thats not tight , me getting the wife to shave my head every month as im not paying a barber a similar amount for a 3 mm buzz cut thats tight

Mind you mrs gets a hairdresser in to cut my 3 year olds bonce ( WTF i think but swmbo) so i balances out ....

That's not tight, that's good sense! I haven't used a hairdresser for at least 15 years, I cut my own hair - short all over - and my wife tidies up the bits I can't see. I do the same for my son and I trim the ends of my daughter's and wife's very long hair just to keep it straight. The cost of the clippers has been recouped dozens of times by now and I've saved all that time waiting in the queue, which I've always detested.

Broken, dear boy, broken*

It's more complex than that. It can happen over time that you grow apart from people, and a thing like this can be the catalyst that makes you realise it. I've realised that I don't really like someone anymore, on the basis of a single remark. You don't have to fight over it, you just adjust your life to avoid being put in that situation again.

*I can see the irony in correcting grammar, and making two typos in the original typing process, which is what I did... ;)

I know it's broken, was a mistake!

Maybe it's an age thing, but I would never ruin a good friendship because of something so trivial.

I'm a little bit Mr. Pink on this. I DO tip, but I don't really know why.

Why don't we tip the friendly shopkeepers, garage mechanics, plumbers etc? Let alone the McDonald's staff.

Have to say that sometimes waiters and waitresses spot the tables they know will give them tips and those that won't...so they attempt to maximize their profit by giving better service where there's a chance of a tip.

"good" is the key word. Sometimes, you realise that a friendship isn't so good any more. I'm not suggesting dumping every friend over every little thing.

Always tip the waiter/waitress even when we just go in for chippy meal which comes to about £15 leave £2. Its a shoot job and wages and I would certainly loose my temper if I was spoke to the way some customers speak to the waiter /waitress.
