I cannot believe what people are willing to throw away!

Over the past couple of months I decided to ask around for a couple of BMX's for my boys to muck around with and strip down! I posted on our local freecycle site and I now have 28 bikes in the garage, 6 being our own personal bikes.

I posted up that I have an 80's Raleigh Magnum and Peugeot Elan and Equipe amongst a few others, mostly MTB's only 2 have i actually paid for and not much at that! Every person i picked bikes up from were going to take them to the scrap yard or council tip????????

Every bike is serviceable and can be put back on the road, what an absolute waste! Now all i can think about is all those wasted wheels sitting in garages and sheds and some ending up being scrapped, determined to find these and bring back to life and possibly find a way to fund it and get some bikes to those who can't afford them.

Crazy!

When I returned to cycling about 12 years ago my inspiration came from a Dawes MTB which I pulled from a skip. I used it for 10 years before finally buying a new one. The skip bike still works.

LOL
Our freecycle has turned into a free for all with people trying to sell you stuff and expecting you to deliver items all the time .There are known car booters always on the prowl for stock and sit there ready to pounce on offers.
Most of the posts are wants and the couple bikes i had off freecycle over the years have all been derelict BSO`s that were only good for the trash.

One of my mates works at the council tip. The stuff he brings home is incredible. Its a treat to pay him a visit occasionally and see what else he has managed to recycle. Over the last couple of years he has put together a really good hi-fi system.. ok none of the components match aesthetically, but are seriously top quality items nonetheless. He spent winter doing up a recumbant cycle which he recently sold for £400.. spent £80 on a couple of bits and basically just cleaned the rest up.
His spare room is full of bits and pieces that are fully functional and clean.. electrical goods, furniture, bric a brac, musical instruments etc etc.. Its the best and cheapest shop for miles !!
We live in a disposable society and stuff is thrown on a whim, often because of a new colour scheme in a room.

Before everything went pear-shaped, the Japanese built an airport out in a bay, on foundations of thrown-away consumer goods - everything from fridges to bicycles to tellies - almost all near-new and in perfect condition, discarded because of the peer pressure to have the latest thing, in a society of flats the size of a shoe box.

The other day I printed up 100 business cards on some plain paper saying "Wanted Old Bikes" etc etc and got the kids to post them down the street.

Have ended up with 2 full suspension MTB's not top of range but perfectly ok (they were going to the tip)

and a possible 4 more bikes!!!! ^_^
