In the heightened state of wariness, the actions taken were both justified and unfunny. No-one wants to take any chances when terrorist organisations are mentioned.
The OP ought to try mentioning that he'd got some terrorist free literature at customs in an airport and see how funny the consequences aren't.

Not sure why you'd chuckle. It's no different from the idiots who turn up at the airport late and and make a joke about having a bomb in their bags, and then wonder why that suddenly triggers a security alert. That happens all the time, not just in the USA. Someone in the UK was jailed for 2 years for trying that at Heathrow.
Security forces can't afford to take the risk something like that might not be genuine.
And it's humor, not humour.

They do have a sense of humour but they are extremely sensitive about foreigners in their country. I tried to drive over the Canada/US border with an orange on the dashboard and the spectacularly robotic US border guard got the vapours when I suggested I could put it in a rubbish bin on the Canadian side of the border. He then told us to go back to Vancouver, pay $50 and come back with all the paperwork to make a road entry to The Land of the Free.
We stayed in Canada, but I was disappointed.

At the time, I felt like orange jump-suit fodder...
One of the things I noticed when I was there was how mad the news channels were. Instead of the news anchors reporting facts, they would say their own opinions. Like one guy reported his son was missing, the son was found in the guy's own basement and the news channel told him live on air. Afterwards the anchors were saying to each other stuff like, "did you see his face?? He's definitely guilty as hell". It was unbelievable that they told him live on air let alone act as judge and jury! And then you get stuff like this... No wonder the Americans are messed up LOL ...

Because every terrorist declares they have a bomb in their bag, its obvious they are going to take you seriously if you do too.
Much to their parent's disgust...... we were out in a busy pub with friends
I taught their teenage daughters a game where you do his and then try and match the WiFi names to the people in the pub
Can have some hilarious results

I'm surprised the US/UK governments didn't use it as an excuse to invade a country, kill a shedload of locals and a few of their own military personnel and then claim it a "success"
