Ride late into the night
The nights will come earlier, and the days later as they ride further south towards the equator. I think it is inevitable that more riding in the dark will become necessary.
I’m sure you are correct, however I still find it slightly negative. If you’re not keen on ”influencers” you pay a lot of interest!
Having followed her channel since the beginning, if she is a so called “influencer“ it is a reluctant one. Who would turn down the opportunities she has been given? Personally I don’t think she is an influencer I think of her ( and now Kyle) more as someone who is just sharing their experiences on you tube. Sure all her sponsors are there for the coverage they get but that’s not her problem and she plays it down quite well in my opinion.
I may seem negative, but I have life experience ahead of this fabulous experience.. and both have yet to experience life's set backs.
My experience has not been shared on line on a video, so excuse me as an average old bloke on a bike that goes to work on it every bloody day.
Knackered shoulder at late 30's from getting hit by a car (surgery job), then some undercarriage surgery that went wrong early 40's (snip for us married fellas). Broken spine and four ribs at 45, very lucky to walk again, took years to get better, then fractured pelvis and hip socket last year at 55, and still riding.... 56 now, getting back at it, shedding weight, still have a job and paying all the bills in the house as the only earner... yet I am still riding.
That might explain my 'questioning' of people that have never gone through life yet. I hadn't done all that 'shoot' yet at 30 years old.
Agree 100% with this.
Not sure when you joined the ride but I remember coming in when she was at 7k subs on YT. I was watching this video & the first thing that stuck was her use of miles rather than km & I thought ok you've got yourself a subscriber here, I wonder how many you have - and saw 7k. I liked how she was quirky too. It made for something different.
And watching their videos I've seen the progression from Kyle not really wanting to be in them to becoming more comfortable. I listen to their podcasts too.
As she gave up her 'proper' (see, that's how you'd use the quotations) job, she started doing more product pushing/mentioning. I saw some people getting a bit cranky over that but it's like hang on, take a step back for a second & have a look - it's now her job. This is how she makes money, so it's to be expected.
Except at that time, she called them "milonis" rather than miles - and a fair bit of other slightly childish language.
oh god, the milee-onés - aaaaaargh!!!! Yes, that was the main thing that put me off the Youtube clips. Just not for me - whilst accepting that such things are VERY subjective (hey, I like Stewart Lee, and the Ting Tings ....). Plenty of normal , intelligent male+female cyclists seem to like her style, so that's cool.
I subsequently met her (briefly) in person - both on A Rather Long Ride, and at a talk she gave. Came across very differently, in a good way.
I'm still not going to rush to follow their stuff in general (mainly cos I also think the Influencer business model is problematic), but this record attempt is sufficiently tough that I wanna know about it. And how fatigue will affect her on-camera style after 90 days :P
