A tailwind on the Nullarbor, average 18.4 mph. Lucky buggers. Amy seems chipper still. Going well for them.

This is the long term wind rose for Eucla, the place on the border between West and South Aussielandia. Given how this looks, they were very fortunate indeed!

Passed through 10,000km yesterday. Nice milestone, about 30% of the way.

Made it to Adelaide. Got through the more remote sections. Looking to have settled into fairly consistent progress and pattern to the days.

Don't think I've ever broken a gear cable.

Shimano [now] recommend replacing the rear cable inner quite frequently. It's not as often as every 2,000 miles, however, which is in theory how far that one had been used for (since the Perth service). I've had rear cables begin to fail in the shifter (it's due to the very tight curve around the ratchet) after about 5-6,000 miles; twice. That's 'coincidentally' how far they've cycled since setting off. It might be surmised that the Perth service failed to replace the rear cable :-\ If so, Amy's may well fail too, in the next not very long. Given that they had a multi-hour delay after the Perth service for some gear/brake related reason, that was not the most successful of bike rejuvenations really. I hope the next one goes better!

A few STI chew cables, mine certainly did. It is why I run bar end shifters these days. Order of magnitude more reliable. A friend had a cable go as well during an audax. Luckily for him, I had a spare cable on me.

Yes that’s the one they use on the Tour Down Under. Sounded like quite a rough weather day and two punctures for good measure.

Gear cables are a pain in STIs as they tend to go in the shifter, well mine did on a 105 set up. I got no warning so now change the rear every few thousand miles. My logic is the front has less work to do. That service is looking increasingly suspect….
