And, not so ancient...........

Very few are... a lot are reconstructions by "archaeologists"

I also love these sites and will detour miles to visit one (or a good church)

I use three methods of researching:

1. Julian Cope's Modern Antiquarian
2. The Megalithic Portal
3. Google for more detailed research

The former two have downloadable Google Earth overlays, which is an advantage in planning

Can't find my photos, but a few years ago I was at Avebury and was fascinated by the stone circle there. And, apparently, it's older than Stonehenge.

Much of the "original" was destroyed by religious groups burying the stones, or land clearance. Then in the 17th Century the stones were broken up for building locally

The present Avebury was reconstructed by Alexander Keiller in the 193-0's who recovered and re-rected the stones.

There is some controversy at the moment as there are other buried tones and a debate whether they should also be uncovered and re-erected

This is a 1724 survey:

OT

My wife hires a Gardener to do our garden, and shw always thought I was a bit "unusual" because of the Green Men and Gargoyles around ... often hidden in the shrubbery

Then my MiL bought me a 30" tall Celtic Cross... which I installed

When Gardener arrived, Wide Wife was out and a stony face asked me what it was.

I answered that I had moved the first wife in...... as it would keep the present one in line

She never spoke to me again, and teh Chrismas card read to my wife and "the Husband!
