My tablet updated yesterday, but I've no idea if it was to 6.0 or just an update to Kitkat (?)

Possibly but I need more memory in the phone for the upgrade process to complete.

Done mine this morning, can't see much different, but the start up takes longer,

Just tried clicking on check for updates and it has started a 400 odd mb download so presume that will be it.

My update was 5.1.1 not 6.0. Mind you it took ages before got 5.0

I've got the update because I have a Nexus 5 phone,.
My HTC phone is still on 4.1.1.
