I wonder about running time trials on busy roads, as there have been many deaths over the years.

While I agree that you should be able to cycle in safety on all roads (except motorway of course). I just think sometimes it not worth the risk.

The one in the OP ... her name was Cath Ward

RIP and condolences to her family. I'm very sad about it although i didn't know her, because i just feel that driver impatience is getting really bad around here.

edit: just this minute got a text from my mate. said very wide dual carriageway, good visibility, driver was arrested. everyone is shocked it happened and can't understand it because of the clear visibility. hope they throw the book at him.

Is there any reason to think there's any connection between time-trialling and the collisions, though? What I mean is, if the cyclists hadn't been competing and were just out for a social ride, would the risk have been in any way different?

The TT fatal collisions I've read about all seem to be down to a careless driver not paying attention to their driving, rather than anything which could be attributed to the cyclists.

You are right, in that accidents can happen anywhere regardless of the cycling activity being undertaken. But my personal view is why hold a cycling event on such a busy road. I believe there was a death on the A1 not to long ago while time trialing, again its a personal opinion but I wouldnt dream of cycling on the A1 and I regard myself as an extremely competent cyclist.
There are a couple of TTs near me wish are on very quiet roads, where hopefully the chances of an accident are greatly reduced.
