Another feeling old thread - pre-decimal currency

While having a haircut yesterday I remarked that my new style (I use the word in its loosest context) of a number 2 at the back and sides and a number 6 on top would be easy to remember.

2 and 6, half a crown, I said.

Cue blank looks from the 30 ish year old barber.

To be fair, I can only just remember pre-decimal currency.

According to the BBC, decimal currency came in more than 46 years ago. Do you never talk to anyone under 50, to be surprised now that someone doesn't know what half a crown is?

Number two all over for me, at 65 my hair is growing as fast as it was when I was a young whippersnapper. As for the currancy, I remember getting my change in decimal currancy for the first time from the works canteen, also getting a shilling pocket money and having to save sixpence of it.

I can't remember what I just came upstairs for, how am I supposed to remember 1971?

I can't remember what I did half an hour ago but remember the 1950's clearly.

And being sent out to the ice cream van with a handful of old pennies and half pennies which I suspect my Dad had found down the back of the settee, only to be told by the man serving that they were "out of date"
