I swear our local paper has one every week, I also swear they never use gruelling to describe anything else. I bet if I did a charity bog-snorkel across the western Siberian lowlands it wouldn't be described as gruelling. If charity cycling stopped tomorrow the word would fall into disuse immediately.

Reading my local paper invariably makes me want to gruel. It's so asinine and jejune.

The thing is when people drive to a place 5/10 minutes walk away anything cycling related is just too much to contemplate, the poor dears.

no, we really shouldn't take the pee...
People who do these rides are not usually experienced cyclists and massive mile munchers.
So 50 miles is a long ride for most of them.
So more power to their elbows.
At least they are getting off their arses and doing some good for someone.

And in one day......

Whenever the subject of me cycling comes up with people I know who dont cycle it usually goes something like this

Them - "What did you do on sunday"
Me - "I went for a bike ride"
Them - "Oh ........ how far did you go"
Me - "80 miles (or whatever mileage it happens to be)"
Them - " ......... oh ........... was it for charity"

Now dont get me wrong nothing wrong with doing anything for charity, but it never crosses their mind I might of done it just because I wanted to and I enjoy it.

Hebden Bridge Times article said:
THE world’s most famous cycle race could be coming to Cragg Vale.

Cragg Road, England’s longest continuous hill climb, could be chosen as a stage route for the 2016 Tour de France.

The first two days of the Tour, the Grand Depart, are held in a new location outside France every two years and Cragg Vale is vying for a place on the route.

Welcome to Yorkshire is leading the bid and although various locations in the county are being considered, spokesman Andrew Denton said Cragg Vale has a good chance of being included in the final route plans.

Mr Denton said: “We have got provisional routes where we would like to take it. Cragg Vale is certainly one of those routes.

“The final decision is out of our hands because it depends on what the Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) wants. If they want a really hard test then they would start at Cragg Vale.

But we would love to bring the Tour to Cragg Vale.”

"I once struggled up that hill in a whopping 23.5 minutes, so it would really give those pro riders something to worry about. I reckon that Higgins chappie would elect to ride the Giro instead if that year's Tour route included a Halifax - Cragg Vale - Burnley stage!"

It worries me though, just that mentality. As a nation we are more sedentary than before - I struggle with my cycling at the moment as I'm not getting out there much but to people around me who are very sedentary, I'm very fit. Not when I have to walk up a steep hill!

It drives me mad literally, being ferried in the car to Sainsbury's which is a 5 minute walk away..at least with a bit of encouragement this is beginning to change but I really don;t understand the mentality of some people. Of course, town planning and roads designed the way they are make it more car-centric..(yes Basingstoke I am pointing at you!) but lordy when did people get so lazy?!
