Some of you may have seen the other thread which has footage of me being assaulted a few weeks ago.

Well, I'm not having much luck because this morning I was VERY close to being taken off my bike by a crazy motorist doing a left turn in front of me:

Is this worth reporting to the police? Probably not, but he could CLEARLY see me and, but for my sharp and sudden breaking, he would definitely have knocked me off.

I'm not having much luck at the moment. Perhaps the new helmet cam is bringing me bad luck!

Assuming it was filmed in London you can just RoadSafe it.
Very poor driving, probably not even paying attention to what they are doing or slavishly obeying the Sat-Nav.

I've commented on the video too.

The problem here is that the road narrows, so that even if you were in a strong secondary lane position, it becomes a very weak secondary (basically you reach the corner riding in the gutter). My advice: ride 6ft (or more) out into the lane on a wide road like this and veer slowly right as you approach the narrow bit. There isn't much traffic, so motorists can easily overtake if they really need to, and will be forced to notice you and give you room in overtaking, so that when you reach that corner, you'll still be far enough out to discourage left hooks like this one.

Riding farther out also gives you room to manoeuvre to the left in case you are still hooked. Without that extra room, braking is your only option.

If you were controlling the lane here, the motorist would most likely not have tried to overtake you. His error was in badly misjudging your speed - many motorists do this (they seem to think we go at about 5mph), which is why lane control is essential when approaching an intersection with motor vehicles behind you. The motorist was able to approach the turn without moving right to pass you. If you were farther out, he would have been forced to move to his right and out of the lane to overtake - a very unintuitive manoeuvre when the driver wants to turn left.

The idea behind the narrowing of the lane is to prevent overtaking here. As a cyclist, it's much harder to control the lane in a situation like this where the lane width changes suddenly, but it certainly can be done and it's important, for the cyclist's safety, to do it.

Shocking driving, badly misjudged your speed, wasn't paying attention or just didn't care.

As said previously, your position was fine before the pinch point although might be better in future to drift out a bit more to the right as you approach it and a bit sooner.

On the other hand, you shouldn't have to cycle round on your guard for numpties like that all the time.

As already written best to be further out near a junction to discourage the left hook and be more visible to the drivers waiting at the junction.

OFFENSIVE POST REMOVED BY MOD
Your post could be so much better if you worded it in a constructive manor.

Something along the lines of

"Whilst the car driver was stupid in making that manoeuvre. You should take control of the lane when it is not safe for them to overtake, to do this you need to check clearly what is coming behind you, indicate and change position when safe. Be aware of what is coming up behind you and how the road changes ahead. Changing position in the road without checking behind you can be very dangerous"

No one is a perfect cyclist, lets not treat everyone as if they should be. Help people work around their mistakes and improve.

Some people like to help and some like to castigate.

And the above post comes from someone who hears a car beep behind him and not only has a hissy fit but also throws his dummy.
As for the others who quoted my post - when, and if, you ride a bike, do you wear lycra or fleece -you are like a lot of bleating sheep. Would any of youmake such an abruot change of direction without checking first?.

I see a change in direction only when it becomes clear that the car is about to take the cyclist's front wheel down, and even then it's in the order of inches. People often subconsciously steer in the direction they're looking. You're talking shite.

I've been clipped and knocked flying by someone doing exactly what the driver in the video did, it isn't nice. Try commenting on the retarded behaviour of the Volvo driver, and not the completely innocent behaviour of the person he almost knocked off.

I wasn't attempting to 'change lane', I was boxed in by a car turning left in front of me. By the time I saw him, I had absolutely nowhere to go and had no option than to slam on my brakes.

Shocking driving by the Volvo. A terrible Volvo driver- who'd have thought!
You have captured a first though- a Volvo indicating ( way too late though of course)! That's rarer than Yeti footage.

Change lanes? He moved to his offside a few inches to avoid the stick-out bit of kerb. The way you talk you'd think he bunnyhopped across the car's roof.
