I was in a car with some mates on Saturday morning, heading out of Glasgow. A lycra clad cyclist passed up as we waited at a red light, and head down, bombed through the next set and the next, both at red. He never slowed down or looked up for other traffic once. A shoot advert for cyclists and a potential contendor for a Darwin award if ever I saw one.

Thanks for posting Grendel.

I think it's great that there are public-spirited people like you about to keep us informed of shocking behaviour like this. Many wouldn't post for fear that others would consider them to be sad busybodies - keep up the good work.

I disagree - in fact I believe any new thread on this forum should be approved by yourself before becoming visible so we can be sure of it's worthiness before we are allowed to read it.

I saw a single male rider on a dark blue upright tandem tricycle RLJing across four major junctions during the rush hour here in Norwich last week ... how the rider was not cleaned up is beyond me, as one of the junctions he crossed was the ring road; Bowthorpe road/Coleman road junction with the traffic in full flow and approaching 40mph, then the Bowthorpe/Dereham road junction, then the Dereham road/Old Palace road junction, and then Dereham road/Barn road junction.

Ironically I was riding my hybrid and towing my semi laden trailer, obeyed all of the lights, and the trike rider only beat me into the Barn road roundabout by 25 or so metres

People miss the point about RLJing - it's not about getting there quicker..

The thing is, how many people die from it isn't the point. I think what pisses me off about it when I'm a driver is that it takes the piss of the rules of the road. The same ones that would probably have the same cyclist screaming for a car not obeying them!

Yep. What ultimately makes me not jump red lights is not that I think it's dangerous, or even that I think it makes drivers treat cyclists worse (I think it gives them an excuse to shout, but I think if we all obeyed lights they'd drive the same and shout something different).

It's not even "respect for the law", since there are plenty of laws I break every day (can't remember the last time I went out of the right filter lane, over to the left gutter, up the inside of left turning traffic to use the ASL "lane", then cut back across three lanes to get to the right filter position again!)

It's more that you can't complain about people breaking a law that you break yourself. I expect motorists not to jump reds, so I don't jump them on my bike. It's a bit like, when going down a residential street with cars parked on both sides, I expect oncoming cars to stop in a gap if the obstruction is on their side. So, when the obstruction is on my side I don't squeeze through, even though I could.

Great comeback as ever, I wish I was as witty and erudite as you.

Allow me to elaborate.

If we want to be treated with respect on the road, then we must hold ourselves to the same standards as we hold other road users. We would rightly be annoyed at motorists driving through red lights, and therefore we shouldn't do it ourselves.

Stop being a dick, Lee. If you've got a point to make, make it, instead of just winding people up. Otherwise, just shut up.

And today's moral high ground... completely wiped away...

Following a hi viz clad mtb'r. White van overtakes us, goes way to close to the Mr Hi Viz, and then 50m later slams on his brakes at the red light we were all slowing down for. Mr. hi viz gives the van driver the stare and then... cycles off through the red light. "KNOB" I shout but I can't catch to explain in a more erudite fashion my misgivings at his behaviour.

How can we expect other road users to give us some consideration if we flout the laws of the road ourselves?

I'm always willing to help. However, any post that used "RLJ" as a verb wouldn't make the cut.

Neither would any post that contained "it's" when it wasn't being used as a contraction of "it is".

As usual Lee, you've made an irrelevant point.

We cannot complain about motorists driving dangerously and flouting road regulations if we then do the same ourselves.

You're being a complete moron, as per usual.
