I was in France last year, and I can echo your comments. I felt 100% safe over there, and to be honset the only cars that came close to us were actually English!
Our continental cousins seem to be much more cycle savvy.

I have never had anything like that, I assume its because I have a fairly knuckle dragger free commute through country lanes and decent area's, I can divert through a Council estate in Knutsford and I have had the odd shout but nothing dangerous, a kind of token effort just to keep their urban scrote credentials fulfilled.

I am not kidding myself that I look that formidable !

Any agro I do get I will try to remain passive whilst collecting as much information as possible for use later.... I had an incident once, I traced the car, I made amends which brought me closure on said incident.

Also, I dont think you can blaim Jeremy Clarkson, I watch Top Gear and enjoy it, I cannot say I have seem any incitement to harm cyclists ?

So there's nothing wrong with Clarkson's attitude to cyclists? do a search on the net and there's plenty, to save you the time I have stuck a couple of links below.

Have a look on the Jeremy Clarkson fansite and see what his followers post about cyclists:-

And here:-

Perhaps his comments may be tounge in cheek sense of humour but sadly there are too many dicks influenced by him.I would never watch one of his programmes if you paid me.

Why let people wind you up?

Recently I've not really let stuff bother me, but at other times I can just loose it. It just depends really. Had someone honk me early down a blind bend on a narrow country lane. I turned around and sort of gestured 'what?'. Nothing rude, though I could just have easily have turned around and given the finger.

Got to the end of the road and was going to ask what that was about...but she got in first and just said "sorry! hit it by accident".

It's the Jeremy Clarkson effect. These twunts watch Top Gear, and they think 'o th47 jeremi K1arksun he s0 l33t k3wl + he sh0utz f1ngz @ sykl... cicl... b1k3 rid3rz so k3wl LOLZ LOLZ LOLZ OMG LOLZ me sh0utz f1ngz me be k3wl!'

JC has actually denounced people just shouting abuse at cyclists, for the sake of abusing them on TV. I wouldn't blame him for it, it is just people have an attitude on something.

I must admit, I haven't had a comment like this for a good long while now. I think drivers on my commute are used to me!

I only do it twice a week but I like to think there must be cars that recognise me. I'm sure no one does mind

I changed my route home a month ago so that I could go up a particular hill for a workout on the way home. I've been getting home a bit more tired but a lot less stressed and I realised that was becuase the new route has a lot less traffic and peds and a lot less cyclists to avoidmanoeuvre aroundfight for gaps etc.

It's worth it just to be able to enjoy your ride without getting pent up in the rat race of commuting.

There will soon be a white minivan with a footprint in the side if he carries on - I think drivers expect a female cyclist to be a bit of a wimp.......they got a shock coming.....they dont call it Shottingham for nothing

I find being a lady they expect me to shrink away and weep. They look so disappointed at my tendency to turn round and say that they're a mother-effing c-word in a nice posh voice (although obviously not if there are children around). Their shock normally stops them momentarily as well.

Re: the OP, you probably shouldn't antagonise motorists and then they'll leave you alone.
In all the years i've been cycling i've never had the sort of abuse you describe, and i cycle through areas where there are plenty of chavs.
If you seriouly are getting completely unprovoked abuse, then you should perhaps move house as it sounds like the area you live in is a bit of a ghetto.

Dont know why it was changed:sad:

becasue it sounds like 'snot', of course .

If you were the mayor of a town called "Sickingham" would you change the name?

I dont usually get abuse - Mr white minivan just seems to like playing 'lets see how close i can get' sort of games at 6.45 in the morning. Either that or he is still drunk from the night before

This has got to be up there with some of your most inane posts. Did you post this because I took issue with your post claiming that riding a bicycle is less environmentally friendly than travelling by car?
