Hi all,

I'm after some advice about how to maximise my chances of not having to pull out of an upcoming touring holiday in Italy.

Earlier this month I was absolutely gutted to have to pull out of a 14 day charity ride on day 3 due to a burning sensation on the front inner of my left knee. The physio told me that it was just soft tissue damage so should heal relatively quick. However, I'm still in slight discomfort and I'm worried that as soon as I try to do a few dozen miles next week when we arrive in Rome the pain will return. This would mean having to pack up my bike and send it home and use trains rather than cycle with my pals, which I am sure you can appreciate would significantly compromise the holiday. Of course I'll do a test run before we go, but I want to rest it as long as poss before this.

Other than icing, tubigrip, making sure saddle isn't too low/too far forward, and keeping gears low, can anybody advise how best to go about approaching the tour? One thing I am thinking is that maybe I should ditch the cleats in case that had something to do with my knee pain?

Any advice hugely appreciated.

Thank you.

See a physiotherapist again, preferably one specialised in cycling if you can. Mine did an on bike assessment

How often are you stopping and changing your position? Personally for touring I prefer not to have cleats but that is my preference and when I ran into problem 5,000 km into a world tour setting a cycling Physio was the best thing that I could ever have done. He saved our tour and it was a positional issue that he picked up on. My hip knee big toes alignment was out. Resolving that saved the tour once the soft tissue damage had healed.

As suggested by @vickster try finding a cycling Physio. It really is worth it and take your bike and cycling clothing plus shore, cleats etc with you on the day. Again it is worth it!
