[QUOTE 2984151, member: 9609"]I was just looking at your vid again and took the following screenshot.
I'm guessing since you have removed the front you don't need a special tool. The outer case "A" stays within the dashboard, and the radio "B" slides out.

There is a small little clip down each side of the radio between the arrows that hold it in place, You should be able to use a couple of kitchen knives and slide them down each side of the radio between the arrows (between the radio and the outer case) which will release the clips, the radio should then just gently pull forward.
You could then maybe take the radio apart and retrive the cassette thing, or just buy another radio and slide it back in.

Thanks. I actually ended up taking the whole damn thing out, cage 'n all (which was less hassle than I'd expected TBH), and brought it in to see if I could get it open. Then noticed a light but distinct rattling noise, and after a bit of shaking a small but by the looks of it pretty important part fell out, so I'm resigned to the fact that after only 18 years it's given up the ghost. And I always thought Sony made quality!

So, I guess now the question is, do I need to buy a new Sony, or could I go for something like a Kenwood? I always rated Kenwoods. But I'm guessing most Sonys would have a similar socket to this:

...and so would easily correspond with the block of cables that's still in the dash. Would a Kenwood have a different socket? I can generally handle plugging things in, but I draw the line at soldering 'n that. Just never done it.

If you pull the block that plugs in to the sony, half way along should be a large block that disconnects.... you would then plug the lead that comes with the new stereo in to that (as said if it doesn't hold radio stations you would need to switch red and yellow wires)

Thanks all. I ended up getting a Sony after all. The old one served me well, so I thought why not? Ebay, obviously. I never buy anything new but food.

Wish me luck with the fixing....

If you change your mind I've got some veg peelings, bread crusts (kids don't like 'em!), an old semi-rotten apple, a yellow sticker pineapple that didn't make it to sell-by date and a few dozen tea-bags, if you're interested get your people to reach out to my people, as they say.

I use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/FlexSMART-B...artphones/dp/B003PPGOC0/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_0
in my car. It's got a line in on it although I use it to play music from my phone via bluetooth and it works flawlessly.

This all brings back memories! Fitted and removed four stereos in my dad's cars over the years.
As far as connectors go you're now into the compatible cable lottery, unless you research what wire does what and bypass the connector in favour of crimp connectors (Haynes manual wiring diagrams are fun!!!).
