Any battery disposal experts?

My Archos 404 (MP4 recorder/player/helmet camera rocorder thingy) came with a li-po battery in it. However, these batteries (the ones in the 404) apparently had a tendency to die and at the same time swell in size. Mine has done just that, and I have just replaced it. However, I now have a very swollen li-po battery to dispose of.

I've read some stuff on the net suggesting putting it in salt water baths to discharge it etc. Does anyone know the truth of what I should do with this battery. I know if it still has charge in it, which it will, that if pierced or shorted it can explode. ;) So at the moment the ends of the wires are taped with insulating tape.

Any advice?

Take it to your local recycling centre who should have a home for it

Er... Nope. If you put it in the bin, when it gets to landfill it will probably leak hazardous materials into the environment.
As far as I was aware, the problem with lipos is that if they are pierced they can short circuit and explode. This is especially a risk with my battery as it is faulty i.e swollen (it was pushing the backing off of my archos!). As it is swolleb, just placing it in the rubbish is not an option as all it needs is a shard of glass to come in contact....;)

That's why I thought I'd ask on here. I will contact the council, but I fear that as soon as I say it is swollen and a piercing risk, they might not know what to do with it!

Apparently the lipos are actually the most environmentally friendly and can when safe, be disposed of in normal rubbish, when fully discharged, however, possibly not the case when swollen.

Have a look here;)

Next time you get into a spot of bother on your wee push bike you can chuck it through the nasty man's car window! ;)

Not all local recycling centres will take them, they often take different things. Like Maz says there may be a charge or they may even be arsy and ask for proof you live in Glasgow. The council should have a list of what is taken at what site.

I' amp not going to get any sensible answers now amp I. I hate it when threads descend into silly comments like this. And anoder thing, I really thought that in the cyclechat cath ode get a lot more of a postive response, instead of all this negative-ity. There is just too much li-ion going on...

I'll get me coat.....magnatom accidently touches the battery cables in his coat pocket....;):eek::sad:
