I was going to ask about the sound receiver. In the fullness of time you may be very impressed by the audio on many blu-ray movies that are in high definition. The sound on some discs with appropriate receiver is a substantial improvement on already great sound on DVDs.

Your Sound set up may be a bit old but it still does the job. I have the SR4300 and a Mission Hybrid speaker set up.

You can buy stuff like that every other year and upgrade but lets face it we are still pretty much still on 5.1 and DTS.

DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD are a lot better (and pretty much standard) imho and I don't even have a sound system myself. Whether all these things are worth the money is another matter entirely.

They are prob better but £400 for a new Amp better is too much for me.
Maybe if I was a big film buff I would but my set up is very under used. With 2 young kids you don't get chance to crank up the volume.
I use some 5.1 faked Headphones currently.

awsome piece of kit.
The Blu Ray player is excellent as is the streaming from your computer
One of the best things I have bought in many a year.

Or buy a PS3 and use this as your Media centre (+ Games console) - They are excellent for storing and playing back music, videos and photo's

A few years ago I was in a guy's house and he had the biggest TV I've seen! It was a plasma I think and it might have been Panasonic but anyway, he showed me the start of Star Wars and it was stunning. I remember thinking that the last time I'd seen the film as vibrant and detailed as that was when I saw it at the cinema.

Thing is, that was only a normal DVD. Plain vanilla DVD but I've not seen any Hi-Definition TV's fed by Blu-Ray players that were better than that, or even nearly as good. One demo I saw in a shop had half of the screen in Hi-Def, the other normal and that wasn't very convincing. The 'normal' side looked like it was deliberately blurred as it was not as sharp as our CRT but even at that, when you stood about eight-feet back you couldn't tell much of a difference between the two sides.

Another demo was Transformers playing on a Sony Hi-Def TV and player. Again, it looked less good than watching the normal DVD on our CRT TV at home. I'm sure there are great Hi-Def TVs etc out there but I'm really not convinced that everything with the badge on is better than what you might already own. Like when everyone rushed out to buy CD players when they first came out on the promise of 'pure, perfect sound'. Most sounded apaling, but most people didn't even notice. They had the latest gadget, which has to be better, so they were happy.

Indeed my PS3 is a godsend- No need for a big clunky media center and I picked up for £25 the Remote,HDMI lead and Casino Royale.

I can play my music and skip tracks from anywhere in the house thanks to the Remote being bluetooth.

My new laptop is HD and has a blu-ray player so I thought I'd buy a Blu-Ray film to try it out.

Then I saw the prices of them and haven't bothered. HMV at the time was selling DVDs for about £3-£4 in a sale and the same ones on DVD for the 'sale' price of around £18 each.

Another reason not to bother buying yourself a Blu-Ray player until the disc prices start coming down a bit.

Don't be daft. Nobody buys blu-rays from the stores. Not so long ago the standard price in HMV was £23-30. Prices on-line are about £8-10 for many blu-rays. Most of the blu-rays in my collection have been bought for about £8. Amazon have been even more aggressive recently with some not long released titles being shuffled at that price and some going as low as £6.98.

The good ones are never that cheap online either. If I wanted some Hollywood garbage I'd probably get them cheap, but I is cultchured dontcha ken !

It's all right. Nothing spectular, very similar to Virgin Media's Music on demand in terms of both content and what is missing, archiving and problems. Needs quite a lot of work.

They are slowly adding tracks which is positive. Search by artist works all right, search by song virtually kills the PS3. Also apparently 5.1 only works through HDCP, not really a surprise, but a shame for some enthusiasts. The sound quality varies staggeringly between different content. If they keep working on it, it'll be a great piece of kit in a year or two.
