A few years ago I was in a guy's house and he had the biggest TV I've seen! It was a plasma I think and it might have been Panasonic but anyway, he showed me the start of Star Wars and it was stunning. I remember thinking that the last time I'd seen the film as vibrant and detailed as that was when I saw it at the cinema.
Thing is, that was only a normal DVD. Plain vanilla DVD but I've not seen any Hi-Definition TV's fed by Blu-Ray players that were better than that, or even nearly as good. One demo I saw in a shop had half of the screen in Hi-Def, the other normal and that wasn't very convincing. The 'normal' side looked like it was deliberately blurred as it was not as sharp as our CRT but even at that, when you stood about eight-feet back you couldn't tell much of a difference between the two sides.
Another demo was Transformers playing on a Sony Hi-Def TV and player. Again, it looked less good than watching the normal DVD on our CRT TV at home. I'm sure there are great Hi-Def TVs etc out there but I'm really not convinced that everything with the badge on is better than what you might already own. Like when everyone rushed out to buy CD players when they first came out on the promise of 'pure, perfect sound'. Most sounded apaling, but most people didn't even notice. They had the latest gadget, which has to be better, so they were happy.
