'er indores said to me: 'have you noticed the flashing?' I hadn't. So I went and had a look. Oh dear. It looks like this:

Now, the question is, can I get to it by climbing out of the left hand Velux, shuffling along the top of the roof, then down the wall? Following the red line...

I know I can do it without doing a Rod Hull or anything - I'm reasonably competent at that sort of thing - but would it be strong enough to take the weight, or am I asking for trouble?

That's probably what he thought as well.

Just make sure you've not got your hand stuck up a birds arse while you do it and you should be ok.

Are you serious? If you slipped and fell you might end up in a wheelchair or maybe dead! Get a pro to do it for you, and while he's at it the pointing on the dividing brickwork looks like it needs renewing.

If next doors needs doing too you could combine.

It's not worth the risk.
The pointing will probably need raking out, then the flashing re tucked in and held in situ with tiny rolls of lead flashing etc while it's re pointed. A pro would probably use a tower and a roof ladder and be done in no time.
It would take you ages ferrying cement to an fro etc.....DON'T RISK IT.

Had exactly the same problem. Got a roofer to remove and replace with new lead flashing and repoint the chimney. £400.

Oh ye of little faith! Of course the pointing needs redoing. Everything needs redoing. But once you start, where do you stop? I'm not made of money. All I want to do right now is sort out that bit of flashing. I'm sure it's not rocket science - if I can get to it. I also know that being where I am, if I start calling in professionals, I'm going to be looking at the thick end of a grand, and I simply don't have it. Have to say at the moment Colderuk's suggestions looks like a frontrunner...

The pointing on your neighbour's side is probably shot as well. You might be able to persuade him/her to go halves with the cost of either the whole job or at least that of setting up the contractor's access platforms.

If you don't get on with your neighbours, pay them to have a go themselves but make sure that they do your side first so there's a chance yours is finished before they fall to their doom.
