Hire a roof ladder.
+1 for this or a cherry picker

Thanks. Interesting. Would I need to hire a roof ladder and a ladder - to get the roof ladder up to the roof - or does a roof ladder come in two sections: an up-to-the-roof bit + an on-the-roof bit?

I am beginning to think you should get a professional in.

Yeah - I can see why you might think that, but in my experience you can actually do this kind of stuff if you approach it sensibly, and read up, and watch youtube vids, and take advice.

We paid 'the professionals' several hundred quid to fix the leaking chimney, and the next time the rain really piled down, it leaked. I read up on repointing, bought the stuff, went up there and did it myself, and now it doesn't leak. I also fixed up a new tv aerial - £25 off ebay - rather than take up the professionals' offers of between £170 and £220.

And like I say, this needs doing, I haven't got the money to pay people to do it (quite possibly badly), but I do think that with a little help from my friends I can probably do a reasonable job myself. £100 for a scaffolding tower + roof ladder - that I can afford. Makes sense to me.

My concern was for your safety, not your ability to do the task. I fell off a roof in 1973 so I speak with experience of how painful it can be.

That professional you hired, hope you went after him.

I hear what your saying and if i can i will as well, for me as well as money another factor is how much time and energy i have left to do much , sometimes it pays me to pay someone .

I think this sums up how most of us feel, we are just concerned for your safety at the end of the day .

the slates won't take your weight and you would be working one handed as you would be clinging on for dear life . even with a tower scaffold you are going to be up and down a lot , if its a new bit of lead then thats gonna have to be cut , your gonna have to be careful chasing out as it looks like the brickwork could soon be loosened , even with a roof ladder you could snap a slate ( they look a bit like false slates as they have the nail hole at the bottom as well ) if you snap one of them then you will have fun . if you have to do it then it would help to put something like a pillow under the bottom of the roof ladder , couldnt you ask about for a good roofer - word of mouth gos a long way

Damaging the slates is the biggy, next to braking (!) your neck, so I suggest renting a helicopter. If you are not in a hurry and dead keen on DIY you could learn how to fly one in no time at all and then you hover over your house and abseil down to fix the flashing - oh wait - I've just spotted a flaw in my idea.
Why not put a bucket under where it leaks?
