I've just finished fettling the control linkages to give symmetrical elevator movement on my Mercury Toreador.

Just need to fit a propeller and wait for my 'pit man' to recover from a broken leg before it can have its inaugural flight.

I used to fly control line many moons ago and quite used to enjoy the smell of diesel fuel and the noisy engines. But with advent of radio control C/L has become more or less forgotten, after all who wants to fly a plane in a circle going dizzy. The one place you can still see it is at the Nats. I think RC flyers see it as a relaxing change from sophisticated electronics.
My own preference is to fly PSS (power scale soarers). These are scale models of just about any prototype but without engines and are flown off slopes with wind blowing directly on the incline which creates lift. No smell, no noise and very relaxing. You can fly anything from a 747 to a Spitfire, although preferences seem to be for fighters and jets.

Woah, what a photo!

I'm feeling very jealous now.

No but not through want of trying when I was younger. I inherited a control line plane but I could never get the engine to work despite repeated visits to the model shop for spare parts. I don't know why it never started, it nearly did but at the time I lacked the knowledge and someone in the know. It looked cool to a 12 year old boy too.

I used to fly powered RC. But i really wanted PSS. Going up the mynd on calm days with with a thermal soarer was a rare treat.
There used to be quite a few PSS kits, but sadly most are no longer available. Ripmax did a very nice Spitfire and P51 Mustang ARTF which converted well to PSS. You might find some secondhand. Phoenix did an excellent EPP range which were indestructible, always a plus, but no longer made. I turned up one place still offering them:http://www.islandmodels.ie/index.php/pss/fouga-magister-pss-detail they do a Fouga Magister and an MB339.
Vortex also did a range of EPP warbirds, not sure if they are still available. Look here: http://www.vortex-vacforms.co.uk

Just been blowing the cobwebs off my memories...

I remember going up the mind when it was blowing a gale with one of these. I took the prop off it but the locals didn't like it. Went a treat up them hills when everything else was grounded. Went like a rocket with a race tuned enya SS25 on full chat!

I had one when I was a laddie. It was a red Cox Super Sport Trainer with a .49 cc glow plug engine. It had one of the spring starters, you put the battery on to heat the plug, wound the spring back and then (in theory) the engine would start when prop released.

The thing I remember about it, apart from it looking gorgeous with it's wheel spats and racing decals , was it taking a chunk out of my dad's finger when we were trying to get it going!!
