Receptionists try and establish how urgent the appointment is to see whether they get you straight through to a doc or stick you through the triage nurse.

IE..I've got a pain in my chest/ left arm. What should I do ?

New system coming in now has electronic auditing and records who has accced what, but the last one (EMIS) doesn't. O/H is amedical secretary and was one of the first in the land to adopt EMIS when it cam in 10 years ago.

It's just that I found out somebody I know works at my Gp on the front desk, so now i guess they know more about me than I would like, but there isnt anything I can do about it. ..Oh and NO it's not about to drop off:laugh:

Change surgeries if you aren't happy about it.

i had a blood test done in August and have been ringing ever since to get my results , only to be told every time if it was bad news the gp would have rung you by now , so dont worry !
when i rung last week and got told same i said once again that wasnt really re assuring enough at this time so was put on hold and transferred to a GP who said exactley the same , so i asked for my results and that made him go quiet whilst he started shuffling paperwork around and then asked me why i had waited so long to ring , so i told him how many times i had rung and the answer i got given each time , he soon shut up

So it's not illegal to look at it, just to tell anyone else about it?
No it is legal to access if you have "reason"

If for instance I had a query about an appointment, blood test or similar and accessed your record then that is legal

Any other access Is an Information. Governance breach and reportable

Not that easy mate.

Provided they are in striking distance, another surgery cannot refuse to sign you up AFAIK

I used EMIS as a medical system for GPs back in 1990!

The summary care record is slowly (very) being rolled out across the country which will give anyone who has legitimate access the ability to access your medical records. It will all be auditable through the use of a Smartcard which all NHS employees use. I believe the ideal eventually is that you will also have access to your own medical records.

Everyone in the Waiting Room hears what is said between the patient and the Receptionist at my local surgery even the 'phone is situated within earshot of the Waiting Room.
In the old surgery the patient went to a serving hatch type hole in the wall of the Receptionists office so there was a degree of privacy as most people had shoulders broad enough to fill the hatch opening.
I suppose the changes were required iin order to provide "transparency", a current buzz word I believe:whistle:
