QUAD did a similar thing with a blind listening test between their QUAD 11 (valve) 303 (conventional class B) and 405 (current dumping) amplifier and no-one could tell the difference.

I think that's the test I read in about 1980 published in Wireless World. It had some proper rigour about it, not the usual rubbish you get in a hi fi magazine.

One of the HiFi mags in the 90s started doing blind testing. I remember one test for speaker cables. While bellwire came clearly bottom, solid core mains cable (of the type you put in the wall for wiring sockets) came second. Other than bellwire, all the rest of the contenders were so close as to be almost indistinguishable from each other, including the stuff costing scores of pounds per metre.

This experiment in honesty didn't last long as their advertisers threatened to pull their ads (and hence payments for said ads) if it carried on. I don't think you can trust a word of the reviews nowadays.

I remember my dad getting a new tv & video then coming back from currys with a £40 scart lead  I told him to return it & tell them to stick it where the sun dont shine & got him one for £2 from a trade supplier of mine.

I still use the cd player and tuner from a technics seperates system that I had when I was 18, some, ahem, almost 25 years ago.I run that through....

a naim audio nait 2 amp then some heavy linn speaker cable and output through....

a pair of TDL RTL3's. For reference of sizing the speakers stand about 1m tall.

back in 1993 when I upgraded the amp and speakers the TDL's were £400 the cable £10 a meter and the Naim amp was £400 second hand.
Happened to be in the shop that I got the gear in a couple of years ago (Soundcraft HiFi in Ashford), got chatting to the guy and he said he would still give me £300 (presumably part ex) for the amp that cost me £400 second hand some 20 years previously.

I have been more than happy with the service it has provided over the years.

Buy right or buy twice....

According my mate, a sound recordist, quality cables make all the difference.
According to my brother, an electronics engineer... it's all marketing bull.

Both are right, to an extent.

In the pro/live audio world, “quality cables” are an essential. But that’s more to do with the physical construction, hard-wearing-ness, and how well they coil than their sonic properties.

It always amuses me, listening to the “audiophools”, with their directional crystalline cables, which apparently make the music sound so much more well defined. It’s funny that they’ll wire up their playback machines with stuff that costs a small mortgage, yet the recording studios which generated the material, and most of the world’s major broadcasters, will be cabled in stuff that costs less than 50p a metre...

I once had a short-lived job as a technical writer for Amateur Photographer, and got into trouble for rating some lenses as 'poor'. I was told this was not acceptable. I asked what was the point of having a ratings system that went from poor to fair, good, very good and excellent if virtually every review resulted in either 'very good' or 'excellent'? I was explicitly told it was for fear of the advertisers. Not long after, I was sacked. What would we do without the freedom of the press, eh?

Lovely speakers, I inherited a similar pair from my cousin when he moved in with his girlfriend years ago. Apparently I should refurbish them and replace all the brittle internal foam. I've also read about vast improvements from upgrading the capacitors. But the benefit would be wasted on my cloth ears, I just like it loud! I've had furniture made to fit round them too. ;-)

I have old hifi and doubt that I will part with it

amp: Pioneer A300R Precision (The Tom Evans tweaked one)
cd player: Pioneer PD-S505 Precision (The Tom Evans tweaked version)
tuner: Pioneer F504-RDS Precision tuner (The Tom Evans tweaked version)
speakers: B&W DM2 3-way transmission
speaker cables: Hitachi LC-OFC (rare as hen's teeth)
interconnects: Silver High Breed Quintessence (hand made and as thick as hosepipes)

the speakers have been set up correctly .... sound is amazing and most importantly, the sound stage is huge. I still need to connect spotify to this system
