best amp that I had was an old Pioneer SA-9800 .... weighed a ton

sold it for 5 times more than what I paid for it when it started crackling and burping (needed new capacitors) .... advertised it properly, stating what the probs were, and listed it on ebay with a start price of £1.99

huge response and had loads of enquiries. Buyer was extremely happy, and had it fully restored. herewith a pic (not the exact one that I had, but the same model)

after I sold that, I was after a Musical Fidelity amp, but ended up getting the Pioneer A-300R Precision .... the Tom Evans version ....

these have a Pioneer case, but the internals are not from Pioneer .... Tom Evans used to work for the military, and is highly regarded in Hi Fi circles .... the internals are totally rebuilt to his specs with high grade military grade components and the soundstage is huge .... these are as rare as hen's teeth.... mine is in prestige condition... I also managed to buy the Tom Evans tweaked tuner for a good price naswell

I really wish I knew about hi-fi stuff. Whatever I buy, it's sounds great in the shop, but crap when I get home. At least with the internet nowadays I can read reviews to help in decision making.

it's the way you set up the speakers ... google 'speaker placement' and you will find that it will make a huge difference .... there are other factors such as room acoustics etc

It's here! This pic doesn't really show what brute this thing is, it's about twice the size of the old Arcam!

Break it in with TP - Full Moon Fever (Japanese SHM version), track 5 -Running Down A Dream. Sounds great!
Yamaha Amps are biased towards their own speakers (which have quite a low sensitivity 80db or less) so they can sound a bit 'shouty' with more sensitive speakers (90db+).
They do work well at quieter levels and sound really good but they also have the ability to go immensely loud, like a mates set-up with Bose 301s (over 100 db sensitivity) powered by a Yamaha 'Natural sound' Amp that could be heard 1/4 of a mile away.

My Rega Planar 2 arrived. Wow but it sounds great! And that's with the Coral MC-88E it came with. Can't wait to fit my Pickering XSV3000. But now I have to go for a swim.
What model amp is it Ed?
Yahama AS501, for the money it was more 'bang for the buck' so to speak, there's an AS701 but for me it didn't have any extras I thought of as worth having, there were also a couple of other contenders but again they had extra stuff, this seemed to be a more straightforward amp if you know what I mean, and it sounded great in the shop. Only problem is now my speakers are a bit of a weak link so I'll have to get new ones which is a shame, I did have to repair them a few years back when a child thought poking the tweaters in would be a good idea. I suppose my stuff has had a reasonable run, it lasted about 20 years.
