Yahama AS501, for the money it was more 'bang for the buck' so to speak, there's an AS701 but for me it didn't have any extras I thought of as worth having, there were also a couple of other contenders but again they had extra stuff, this seemed to be a more straightforward amp if you know what I mean, and it sounded great in the shop. Only problem is now my speakers are a bit of a weak link so I'll have to get new ones which is a shame, I did have to repair them a few years back when a child thought poking the tweaters in would be a good idea. I suppose my stuff has had a reasonable run, it lasted about 20 years.
Try to audition any new speakers through the same amp, our Yamaha is immensely loud with my old Mission speakers (they're far too 'sensitive' at 92 db 1 watt at 1 metre) you be far better off with some that need a lot of power to drive them.
I really like having the old skool 70s loudness setting on an amp. I sometimes want to listen to something at very low volume without headphones, and it's simply not possible with my 'posh' MF amp, as you can hardly hear a thing.
Mrs 3BM is moaning that the amp looks like it's from the 70s, I like it.
