It's a rectal probe. You just insert the blunt end, twist the handle to switch it on, and begin communicating with the Mothership.

And that gets my vote for Reply Of The Year.

ETA - I'm impressed that nobody's said anything about uphill gardening :becool:

I remember my uncle using a bull pole [270] to lead his prize bull by it's nose-ring from it's field to it's pen. Everything was fine until it leaned on him against the bars then stood on his foot... he was in hospital for weeks and lucky to survive- then when you look at the field boundaries nowadays... just a few strands of barbed wire!
 
My guess (without seening the end of it properly) is that it is incomplete and the pointy bit at the end had a shovel fixed on it. Perhaps in a different metal or wood for a set reason (not digging holes).

So the metal bit would just be to join the shaft to the shovel bit.

I am also intrigued by all the tools labelled for use on turnips. Turnips must have been very popular and tough in those days.
