Thanks again for the replies.
I'm trying to work out if I am looking at this through rose coloured specs. There is obviously a big difference between training someone you work with and half a dozen strangers. I don't want to find out my expectations were completely unrealistic.

Wobbler,

I'm thinking of moving on from my informal tutoring to studying for a PGCE to teach maths in secondary schools. As part of that I've been observing/volunteering in a local school one day per week. I'd recommend you do something similar if you're not sure what you want to do. It'll give you an idea what it's really like in the workplace and a chance to talk with people who are doing that job day in, day out.

Being in a school has certainly been an eye-opener for me - although it hasn't put me off yet!

There's a whole world of difference between teaching in a school, teaching in FE and teaching in company. I've done all three and found the first the most rewarding and the last two the easiest. I thought that the transition from instructor to teacher would be easy but I'd never encountered fatigue like it when I started teaching.

One day a week is a far cry from a full timetable and beware of teachers that make it look so easy - they've probably bribed the kids with sweets

Teaching is the only job where your 'clients' don't want the services that you offer.

Having said that, I wouldn't swap the job for any other.

Anne,

That is good advice. Thanks.

Though you would not get me teaching in a school. As Vernon says some students just do not want to know.
At least with the lifelong learning malarkey the folks generally want to be their.

Sit up straight and none of that text speak. Only joshing sheddy, just getting a bit of practice in. What does BM stand for really?
