Any Portsmouth cyclist?

Hi,

Need advice on a route really, got to get from the Hard to the Airport Service Road, was thinking about making my way up to the Rudmore Roundabout and then across to Stubbington Avenue then straight down to Burrfields Road.

Does that sound reasonable?

Sounds pretty reasonable to be, there's on-pavement cycle paths most fo the way along the dual carriageway and a short cut up flathouse road that takes you much of the rest of the way. You can (and probably should) go under the Rudmore roundabout which should (if you choose the correct tunnel) bring you up ready top rejoin the road as it heads towards London road.
I hate Portsmouth with the fire-y passion of a thousand burning suns, be sure to defecate in the streets for me won't you?

Is the rudmore roundabout subway pretty straight forward?

Nope, I trained as a radiographic in Portsmouth, including a spell at QA. I just didn't get on with the city, or a lot of the people I met there. Gosport was nice though.

And yes, the underpass leads straight from the signposted cycle path. You want the middle of the three passages, and then a right turn and the road past the travel lodge should take you towards London Road.

Apart from the yobs!

You can get a few yobs down there depending on time of day. There are also barriers on the paths

An alternative is Queens Street, turn left at the Cathedral, and follow the Dockyard wall to Flathouse Road. Then follow Herbert Street and a quiet underpass. There is a cycle track (Estella Rd) that then leads to the Rudmore Roundabout, letting you rejoin your route at Kingston Crescent.

Thanks, I did wonder about yobs lol, I should imagine thats quite a big unerpass at Rudmore, just the kind of place you could run into trouble. The earlier subway and then up Estella Road looks like a good bet

We generally use the trikes so the barriers at Rudmore are a nuisance.

sorry to be a pain but can you just confirm there is an underpass at Herbert Street, I looked at it at Google Maps and there is a thin line under the motorway but when I try and go down Herbert Street with streetview you can't go down it.

Yep, go up Herbert Street and there is an HSS hire shop, There is a block to main traffic, and two cyclist gaps. From here you will see an section of road that goes under the main road , this then comes up and connects with Grafton Street and on .....

Thanks for the tips guys, done the route a few times now. Firstly the underpass at the end of Herbert Street works well and it looks relatively clean and clear of hazzards!

I go along Kirby Road rather than Stubbington Avenue, mainly because of the super wide pavements and lack of pedestrians lol. Bit of a bugger at the end though getting across the road onto the correct side to be able to turn left at the Star and Garter. Also nobody told me about that mountain in Burrfields Road!

Only real problem was coming back towards the Hard, once I'm back under the underpass and going along Hope Street into Queens Street I'm still on the pavement on the right hand side past Nelson etc and there's usually a fair few pedestrains who shoot me dirty looks! Trouble is getting over to the left hand side is pretty tricky from my starting position in Hope Street, maybe not so bad half way down Queen Street but had a lot of nasty looks by then!

Anyway I will perserve
