looking at trying to find insurance for 17 yr old step son who will be hopefully having his test soon , and we keep getting quotes for £3k and upwards on a std Corsa 1.2 !! so we tried one of these companys who specialise in young drivers and also fit a tracking box along with restricting allowed miles ie 6k in this case , and a company called Insure The Box keep coming out a lot cheaper ie asking for just over £2k .

so my question is anybody have any experiance of this co or any others offering same

The corsa is probably a fair bit of the problem...

I had some friends that looked into tracking boxes, but none of them took up the offer as the savings were marginal. The scalability of it may be slightly better now.

You may be best off getting him as a named driver for a year or two or even on one of the few companies that offer named driver no claims discounts. The downside of this is that it locks you into them for his policy later on and one of the companies doing it is perceived as 'expensive'. The savings are there in some cases though.

I wouldn't pay £2000 for a year's insurance... waste of money, not withstanding the cost or running a car for a 17 year old's joyrides... I'd be telling young Master Biggs that he'll have to wait. Unless he goes out and gets a job to pay for it, the car and the fuel he uses himself!

I've turned into my dad.....

My niece has a 10 year old little Lupo, all be it the 1.4 and she pays....wait for it...... £4200 a year TPFT  - I just paid less for a decent MTB for my son, than it costs her in a month for insurance.

The 'box' gadget might be the only way of keeping the costs down.

Youngsters are priced out, but there is a reason.
Accident free for first year and black box removed, 10 days later car written off upside down in field, thankfully no injuries to anybody.
Doh ! Big premiums again then ?

Would'nt pay such rip off premiums, just get a good bike and a rail/bus card and get healthy at the same time ! My parents never drove and they managed with four of us on public transport and cycling.I guess it is a bigger thing for youngsters nowadays but if they want to drive then let them pay for it themselves or do without......oh i'm a harsh (but fair) parent !

It's just a total waste of money though. I hardly use my car so make sure I get a decent premium - even taken commuting off my cover now, so have got it down to a decent price for the 'use' the car gets.

TBH If I was 20 (like my niece) I'd spend that cash on some nice bikes.

I believe my niece has 'coilovers' on order, which can only mean she is 'lowering' her Lupo  - if that happens I shall remind her to let the insurance know (PS feel a bit like big uncle as her dad has buggered off) just in case.

When my lads were of that age I flatly refused to insure them on my car, although I happily paid for them to learn to drive. Why?

Because of my slightly older colleagues' experience. Every single one of them, some 30 people in all, had their child bend the car. Several were written off and the cheapest was over £1500 worth of damage, this in the late 1990s! A friend had an Escort RS and the insurance hike for his daughter to drive it was £3000. He bought her a Mini and paid the comprehensive insurance on that with change from £3000.

Old mini's are well sort out by kids who have just passed their test. It is the cheapist thing to insure on the road.

I had my own insurance at 18 - yeh it wasn't as bad as it is today, but it was still expensive. I will not insure my kids on my policy when they get to that age - they can travel by other means. £3000 buys loads of taxi's anyway !!

I expect my son will bike it anyway. Daughter won't, so looks like DAD TAXI.

I wonder how many taxi rides you could get for that amount?

I know. No convincing her it's madness. She has a low paid job and spends most of her wages on insurance. Can't influence her as her boyfriend/fiancée has a Corsa that's got plastic bits on it. WTF get engaged and spend all this money on car bits - they could save some serious cash towards a deposit on a house instead.
