Anybody else always seem to choose the wrong clothes when starting their ride?

..I mean...I kind-of know,in theory, that removable layers are the answer, and that one should dress just a little cooler to allow for heating up through the energy of riding........but this demands carrying something to store your extra clothing all the time. Perhaps I need to dig out those geeky 'Aldi' arm and leg-warmers I've never used?
Oh-hum.
Its just the annoyance of always seeming to get it wrong in this kind of summer:cold: that's neither:rain: one thing or the other. :sun:

Time to ride to my local pub in my Speedos and Wellys again I suppose. I wonder if they'll serve me this time?:hyper:

I often "get it wrong", or alternatively I'm just out cycling for long enough to conditions to change. What's the problem with carrying something to store the clothing? Clothing doesn't weigh much so even a lightweight rack, saddlebag or bar bag is enough - although you may need to use stuff that packs down small to fit it in some bags.

Even the pros take something to store the clothing - they call it a team car. You probably don't have one of those, so do something else.

Arm warmers, gillet, easily removable and carryable.

It's the wind makes the difference. Today was windy but not cold, so the arm warmers came off quite quickly but a few days ago I didn't take anything and when I turned back into the wind, I began to feel cold. As soon as I stopped it was OK but on the move, quite chilly.

The gillet I recently bought is having quite an outing. I'm starting to wonder how I lived without it, commute-wise

Do you use arm warmers with it? I use mine a lot but when off the bike. I can't think of the last time that I wanted my body wrapped up warmer than my arms - the reverse is more often the case.

To be honest, it hasn't yet been cold enough on my commute, to cover my arms. I've usually been wearing a short sleeve base layer underneath

I don't own a pair of arm warmers. I usually use long sleeve base layers.

I do own leg warmers though, but only use them in winter - either under my waterproofs or with baggies

I am a big fan of arm warmers and leg warmers and then an emergency jacket stowed away. It is rare that on a ride I will add clothing, only if I have a mechanical, but it is not uncommon for me to move the arm and leg warmers once the sun finally warms up. I usually start every ride cold and trust that I will warm up with effort.

For the commute I just just slightly colder than the conditions and rarely take anything off, then again I commute in normal street clothing.

Hi All,
Well, shortly after my post (I'd changed my apparel 3 times before I cocked my leg-over!) I wore my usual summer shorts and short-sleeved jersey BUT dallied with mi £3.99 Aldi arm-warmers for the first time.

Just right!

I took'em off....put them on again...then took 'em off...etc.
So it seems they have a use after all?

I tend to ride with a minimalist (non velominati-approved) back pack so all good.
Recently though - I have started a ride and just WISH I had worn my trusty RonHill bikesters and Autumn/Spring soft-shell.

The Met office weather shows a "feels like" temperature which is a more accurate way of judging the clothes to wear.

I tend to run a little warmer so 13'c with a sleeveless baselayer and an S/S jersey does me fine. I'll add a gilet if it's rather breezy. Given the last few weeks weather i always carry a packable rain jacket which weighs almost nothing

::edit::

I also have a pakajak II jacket now so that will replace the rain jacket which is an Endura Helium unless otherwise

Nope no problems here but left a plastic lightweight jacket thingy in my locker at work to warm me up when I have to cycle home in wet clothes like yesterday.

Hi RoubaixCube,

Yup-I DO have a cheap (sweatomatic) scrunchable rain-jacket too. It has proved itself may times in damp weather but is a bit of a boily nightmare for summer showers. I used to cram it into a bottle cage 'tool bottle' so it was always ready for sudden downpours.....but I am trying these days to carry as little as possible 'on' the bike. But hey-I ain't never going to be a weight-weeny so let's get real?
