Change at New Street and Edinburgh! (but you only have to change platforms, not termini). Takes roughly as long as the journey from London, surprisingly...

Now from Dorchester - that is a bit of a trek. Berwick still leads on points, then

I live not far away. It is a nice pleasant historic town with the River Severn going through it. Not bad for shopping, the the abbey is worth a visit and has a superb park where the Shrewsbury flower show is held . It has a lot of old money rather than new if that makes any sense. There is some beautiful countryside and towns in Shropshire and you could have a great week cycling and pottering about. Also you can get on the Cambrian Railway line to pwlheli or Aberytswyth which are spectacular. If you get to Machynlleth you can get an all day rover ticket for £6.00 and you can stop off at some of the steam heritage lailway lines around the coast. You will enjoy Shropshire and is great for cycling with lots of very quiet roads.

Though I love Northumberland, I think Shrewsbury might edge it for a complete change of scenery... hang on I'm getting mixed up with Salisbury,,,, I've never been to Shrewsbury! Oops.

Gay Meadow, footballs in the river, man with a coracle- ah those were the days.

But only if you're bike free.

I caught that train the other week and there were notices proclaiming "no cycles allowed".
