I'm in HE (university now, but was at a HE college) - what area are you looking at working in?

In my case I sort of 'fell' into a teaching role, having thought it was more of a consulting job which is what I was doing before-hand. However, after a very steep learning curve, being supported by students and a few staff, once I'd got my first 3 months out of the way I've found it a rewarding career to be in.

In a teaching role my experience has found it's important to learn your 'craft' - in whatever subject area. Also it takes about 2 years to build up enough teaching materials to be able to then re-use/update without writing afresh. Those two combined mean long hours and a lot of unpaid effort at the start, which is why many leave after a short while.

Not everyone can teach. I've had colleagues who've thought they could and found it too hard, then left. It's not 'teaching' in my case, it's 'facilitating learning' - my aim is to enthuse the future professionals I have in the classroom (my students). Once interested in my subject area they'll read, ask questions, think, challenge conventions and much more. At that point my job's done and their grades are much better. Therefore I don't see myself as a teacher.

In addition there's more to FE/HE than just a teaching role. You need the support staff and too many forget that :okay:

I'm in vocational further education and got into it by teaching my specialism, and I loved it. A promotion came up and despite some reservations, I decided to go for it and much to my dismay, got it. The classroom is where the real enjoyment is although another opportunity has arisen meaning I may be setting my sites on another move that would take me even further away from what I thought I did best. Its a strange world 🌎

Many years ago I was an FE lecturer, and I trained teachers too ... I lasted a year, before moving into HE (now left that, after 18 years).
FE was ... great colleagues, mostly fulfilling work, but a horribly resource-poor place to work.
