We're heading there next month for a week and I was wondering if anyone here could recommend places to visit etc. We won't be cycling but we do enjoy birdwatching and walking, is there anywhere you can recommend for that sort of thing?

It's not a big place - around 3 hours to circumnavigate (by car) the whole island. The north is great for the cliffs and views. My advice is to find out when the tour buses go there, then hire a car and avoid that time (we've had a couple of evening picnics when everyone else has buggered off). There's plenty of vineyards if you are into wine tasting.

I have only stayed in Puerto del Carmen, there is a walk from Arrecife back along the coast to Puerto Del Carmen, I don't know about bird watching but plane spotting is guaranteed on this walk as it passes right next to the airport, you can stand under the flight path as the plane comes into land, they are not that far above you, we usually get the service bus into Arrecife and walk back, I think its about 10k.

A shorter walk the other way from Puerto Del Carmen brings you to Puerto Calero, with a boat trip back if you like, this is probably a better walk for bird watching.

I have toured the island by car and bus, its very dry, there are probably some good walks in the hills but I havn't done any.

Don't be persuaded to buy olivine gemstones. Pick it up of the floor yourself whilst out on walks lol

So @glasgowcyclist , you are going to Lanazrote, where I've been, and in turn I am going to Maiori / Amalfi where you have been. What are the chances. (Quite high probably)

Salinas de Janubio salt pans ideal for bird watching.
Teguise market, quaint village and the market is large, enjoy a nice walk around - additionally plains south-west of Teguise for bird watching
If you want to cycle nice costal route (bikes can be rented cheaply for the full day)
Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, birds mammals and reptiles

So we are!

It's my first time in Lanzarote. I've been to Italy umpteen times, although only once to the Amalfi area. I hope you have a great time there.
