Yeah, actually people were really great. Van driver and taxi driver both stopped, as did another cyclist who waited with me until the ambulance came.

Good for them, and good for you. Just goes to prove that people can be stupid and still do the right thing... or it might be something to do with you being a laydee but at least they stopped.

It definitely sounds as if the van driver was at fault. If you're interested, Russel, Jones and Walker are the firm that handle the CTC legal advice for cycling-releated accidents and they do have some kind of no-win no-fee thing, which you don't need to be a member of the CTC to make use of. Give them a call and they should be able to help you.

Also, it is worth getting your bike looked at at a bike shop. If you went into the side of the van hard it is likely that your front wheel has been bent and will need trueing or replacing, and there is also the possibility of cracks in the frame. I'm guessing that your glasses won't be cheap to replace either, so it is worth looking into whether these costs can be covered by the driver's insurance.

Oh, and ignore Dom. He's renowned for being an insensitive bastard!
