Anyone else got tinnitus?

I have a constant whistling which feels like it’s more from the right ear but a bit from both plus the left ear sometimes has pulsatile tinnitus too which I can clear a bit by popping my ears. I suspect my eustachian tubes are a bit gummed up.

I didn't realise that people lost low frequencies as well as high!

I can still hear way low, which I like, but my high frequencies are gone.

More worryingly, I am pretty much deaf at certain upper midrange frequencies. They don't coincide with the notes on a well-tuned piano - I can hear all of them - but if a loud noise is going off at one of the precise troublesome frequencies I wonder why people are running around blocking their ears! (It happened at work once when I accidentally blasted them with a tone that I couldn't hear. I could hear the frequencies immediately either side of that particular one.)

As for tinnitus... It is there in the background but I don't normally notice it. I haven't worked out why, but sometimes it seems to become more noticeable and annoying.

I recently had a shock - my tinnitus stopped while walking in the woods. After 60+ years of whistling away it took a little break. Ten minutes of silence.

The quiet was shocking. Then it started again.

I wish I had a clue about the cause of the interlude.

I've had tinnitus in my left ear for about 4 years now. Its a constant even pitch. Very rarely it stops for 10 minutes or so and just as quick as I realise it, it's back again.

I had a similar experience last weeked, went to bed as usual on Saturday night, woke up early hours Sunday morning and thought something wasn't quite right. Then it hit me that my tinnitus of the last 30+ years had gone completely, not a whisper to be heard. I couldn't quite believe it initially, it has disappeared on a couple of occasions in the past but always returns after a minute or so, but on this occasion it didn't and all was still silent half an hour or so later. So I thought I'd make the most of it and as it was a warm and clear night went and sat out in the back garden and did some star gazing whilst 'listening to the silence'. I tried to stay awake as long as possible ( I managed until about 3.30 in the morning) but eventually succumbed to tiredness and went back to bed.

Sadly it was back the next morning , dashing my hopes that it may have gone permanently.

An unusual symptom has appeared in the last couple of mornings. I always have a high pitched whistle. Last two mornings I kept hearing a hum. I've been up and checked there wasn't anything electrical switched on. Even been outside.

It's driving me crackers tonight and again can only hear it in the bedroom or lounge. Just realised it's not when I'm moving about but mainly lying down and left ear only.

At least its not electrical. Doh. I've been saying I can hear a hum.

My tinnitus gets a lot louder if I strain my muscles as if I'm trying to pull my jaw back toward my neck.

I was in the infantry on the mortar line for 10 years then at the other end for a sometime. I should really make a claim as my ears are shot. Amplivox(the army’s version of ear defenders) were akin to stuffing a 2” square piece of toilet roll in your ear. My right ear is okish, my left is less so.

About 12 years ago when I tinnitus I saw an article suggesting the cause is muscular tension. At the time I lost a lot of hearing in my left ear (the one affected), and had severe vertigo. Docs couldn't explain it, and it went on for over a year. To cut a long story short, in desperation I went to a nutritionist (sp?) who said 'a pound to a penny you are lactose intolerant'. I wished I'd gone earlier, as I may have saved my ear. I could feel the tension in the left side of my body, but couldn't stop it. After giving up milk (especially cheese) the tension and tinitus disappeared.

Yes, had it since I was a child.

Now I have hearing aids they seem to help.

So have I: I can't remember not having it, in fact. I suspect it is related to an ear operation as a child.
