Anyone else hear "The Hum"

It's that low pitch distance humming noise which science can't find an answer for, usually described as a diesel engine idling.

I tend to hear it in the evenings, autumn to winter time but only indoors, step outside, go in the shed or the garage and I can't hear it.

My better half and the neighbours can't hear it and just think I'm potty, but it is widely reported.

Some say it's distance factories, generators, waves all sorts of reasons. I live in a rural area and just can't track it down.

Somebody prove I'm sane by admitting they hear it too please !!

Tinnitus?

Been checked for that. Also don't hear it at other locations, just at our house I think the most well known occurrence was in Bristol in the 70's.

The nearest explanation I can give for my area is high pressure water pipes some distance away, but I'm not convinced.

The odd thing about it is that the house seems to act as an amplifying drum as if the sound is coming through the ground and into the floor and walls.

As it's such a low noise I can easily hear it over the TV.

Apparently when you get older you lose high end hearing, but become more sensitive to low notes.

Not that, checked that too. Mrs S just thinks I'm bonkers.

There's been so much written about The Hum. There's even a Wikipedia page on it. it does become a major obsession for some people.

Problem is when you hear it your attention is drawn to it, making the hum more prominent than it actually is.

My mum aged 86 was being driven batty by it. Turning the power off at the mains made no difference. Curiously she hasn't mentioned it for a while now, maybe because she's got other things on her mind.

A little while ago I experienced similar. I thought it was something external but it turned out it was me. It passed but it's very easy to convince yourself there is something to hear.

When I hear it, it's usually my brake blocks rubbing on the rim. I'd check that if I were you

I've never heard The Hum. I have smelled it on occasions tho'.

I was plagued by The Hum a while ago. It was intermittent and I only heard it at night when the streets were quieter. Somebody suggested that it might be the Crossrail tunnelling machine. Anyway, after a few months it stopped and it hasn't returned.
