Every time one of my parents' dogs died, they said "Never again", mourned for a while, but then eventually went out and chose the next one.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Their last dog died when they were old and frail and they knew that another dog would outlive their ability to look after it. It hurt them a lot to admit that they couldn't cope with another one, but it was the truth. They died dogless ...

At which point (*gulp*), I think I'd better log off for the night ...

It's funny - I typed out that post without feeling particularly sad, but when I proofread it I suddenly came over all emotional!

Just do it, you'll never regret it. Make sure you take out pet insurance and all will be fine.

My black Labrador is my bestest, stupidest, hungriest friend who never tires of giving you love (not in a Jimmy Saville way!) and always raises a smile.

He's the best thing we ever bought, EVER

Dogs are great...

I was doing money problems with the kids at school, and was trying to think of an engaging way to present the topic. I came up with the idea of basing it around the cost of owning 3 GSD'S:

Vet's offer a healthcare plan (worm treatment, flea treatment, annual injectios etc) which costs £10.50 per month for the first dog, and £9.50 per month for each dog after.
£10.50 x 12 = £126
£ 9.50 x 2 = £19
£19 x 12 = £228

£126 + £228 = £354

Bear eats Royal Canin prescription food at £70.99 per 14 kg bag.
Ella eats Wafcol Hypo Allergenic at £44.99 per 15 kg bag.
Locky eats James Wellbeloved Senior at £40.00 per 15 kg bag.

Each month: £70.99 + £44.99 + £40 = £155.98

£155.98 x 12 = £1871.76

What is the total cost of looking after the three dogs for 1 year?

£1871.76 + £354 = £2225.76

And there’s more!

Insurance for Bear - £28.99 per month. (£347.88 )
Insurance for Ella – £31.95 per month. (£383.40)
Medication for Locky £49.50 per month. (£594.00)

Total (Ins & medication) £1325.78

What is the total cost of owning three dogs for one year?

£2225.76 + £1325.78 = £3551.54 !!!

Not including excess, minor illness costs, travel and errrr legs of lamb:

Thanks for your responses. I didn't realise the amount of time and comittment needed to look after a dog.
Not something we as a family can do right now,so i'll take the kids over to my friends and play with his new labrador puppy
Do not do this or you will end up buying a lab puppy for yourself.

I tried to warn you!

You can guess what breed we have. We are now on our third a puppy of about 6 months, lost the old boy in September and lasted a month without. After the first we lasted two days! We had the first dog before kids, he was such a gentle dog that we went for the same breed again. Second boy just the same an added bonus for me the first one barked about five times in his life and second one I never heard him bark at all. We will have to see what happens with this one, one trait in common with first is he is a chewer! Second was a digger but they generally settle after awhile. Downside is shedding hair and all the other dog/animal traits but they also give so much back.
