"Stampsies" was when the knuckles are most vulnerable, particularly the way we played it whereby any and all watchers joined in with stampsies whilst the owner of the dropped conker tried to save it
Indeed! Conkers was a blood sport at my school! 😂

We played conkers once at school, about 1988 IIRC. Even back then it was going out of fashion. Me and my mate tried to keep the flame burning, we even did the whole soak in vinegar, baking etc under my dad's instruction. But we found you just can't beat a natural conker.
I did collect some with my son a few years ago when he was 7 or 8, had a couple of games when he was still young enough to enjoy them, but I think that boat has sailed now he's 11
