If you look carefully, you will see that they are playing croquet. That is the National Association of Croquet Tea approved method of cucumber sandwich.

I'm using the approved method for cricket - cucumber sliced with an off-kilter knife, so that the slives are a bit wedge shaped, placed between slices of buttered Kingsmill.

There is a third way, the approved way for Vicars Coming To Tea, which involves shaving slices off with a razor, and including cake crumbs in the butter.
