Actually, i wouldn't mind doing "extreme cleaning" as a job. If you wear one of those white throw away boiler suits and wear a mask, gloves and good footwear you'd be ok. I saw a program once where a bloke got call outs to such places,as well as being called out to clean up after someone had died in their home and hadn't been found for weeks. Ok,it was a bit gruesome, but he said he made 50 grand a year,as he could more or less name his price. He said people who earned half of what he earned looked down on him, because he was "just a cleaner" in their eyes.

Can I suggest the thread is retitled most disgusting toilet or cleaning anecdotes? At least then people know to avoid some of the crap?

this (see bold), nobody chooses to live in filth and squalor, the complexities of life can become to much for some and struggle to deal with a continuing downward spiral, poverty can cause people to forget or careless about the necessities of life which can lead to not seeing or recognising this downward spiral, depression or mental health issues are a major contributor to these situations.
There are a number of phobias that make people unwilling or too scared to flush their lavatories. Some think that they will be sucked into the plumbing system, and some believe that some malevolent person or creature will somehow gain access to their home via the lavatory. A friend who was a social worker all her working life told me that those with mental health issues often have fairly challenging lavatories for a whole raft of reasons.

I remember when i worked in an old folks home years ago. Sometimes the staff forgot to empty a commode and it'd end up being left for a day or two in a very warm room. A skin thicker than that on a rice pudding would form. When you tipped the contents down the sluice it'd it you! xx(

I love the fact that Accy makes out it's a London problem and that you'd only see this kind of squalor in the South, and then masterfully works in several examples of similar and worse near him. It's comedy writing and timing of the highest order.

My foray onto comedy didn't go well either.

Strictly speaking, if one goes by the strict geographical definition, Accy actually lives in London.

Clearly nobody contributing to this thread has ever visited a toilet in Africa. My colleague in Lagos found a rat swimming around in his.
