Seems like a standard Banksy to me.
There isnt any racism intended, swallows are a migratory bird from Africa, I think the council have over reacted by painting over it. They could at least have removed it and sold it, rather than just painting over it. Seems like cultural vandalism on their part.
I'm no fan of random graffitti, but genuine street art should be encouraged.

Because it isn't vandalism. It's street art. You may not like it, but that doesn't make it vandalism. Vandalism seldom comes with a (however nominal) "estimated value of £400,000".

Quite a few of Banksy's efforts have been gubbed, which is a real shame as he's a genuinely talented guy. If only Wallsend council would show the same zeal and get shot of a badly drawn cocknbaws with 'Willy' scrawled next to it as it spoils my walk to the Metro.

I'm not sure if it was a Banksy effort, but I recently read a story about another that was painted over. A week later there was a new painting, of the guy who was covering it up.

I saw the new Banksy in Folkestone yesterday. People were flocking to see it and so thrilled that it had appeared. Not a controversial one though - but seeing this one I think it's a brilliant comment and shouldn't have been painted over. Risky, but clever. Not very complimentary to the anti-immigration crowd so I suspect it may have been cruisin' for a bruisin' in due course anyway.
