Interesting device.

I've ridden a NuVinci hub bike.

It's a different experience, one I could get used to, although I didn't find it superior to an ordinary internal gear hub such as a Shimano Alfine - which I have - or a Rohloff, which I have also tried.

The NuVinci change requires quite a firm twist, which might be tiresome on a long ride.

The bike I tried also had the Gates belt drive.

It popped off, which brought the test to an end because you can't just wind the belt back on.

The dropouts have to be loosened and the belt re-tensioned.

I'm not convinced by the belt, not least because Gates say its life is about twice that of a chain.

That's not very much given that a replacement - if you can get one - is nearly £100.
