So I got home from a ride today and while cleaning my bike I found this (see attached picture) I can't quite tell why it's there but it looks like it was put in by manufactures.

Which bit? The clear plastic on the chainstay or the gland on the gear cable? The plastic is there to protect the paint work if you get chain slap. The gland is supposed to be pushed over the inner sleeve of the gear cable so it butts right up to the cable stop to reduce crud ingress.

Well I feel stupid right now! It's just the clear plastic thanks thought it was something more drastic than that

You might want to add some helicopter tape under the cables too to stop rubbing if it's a new bike

Might be more important to add a chain protector, you can buy them but I made one from an old inner tube secured with impact adhesive.
