As a motorcyclist too I am in the habit of using my decent lights when on my bike, night and day, sun .and especially, cloud and rain when overcast.

From my riding I seem to be in the minority. Hardly ever see anyone using lights in the day time - even when the conditions really do warrant it.

Anyone else on these forums a 100% light user?

Most of the people my way don't bother with lights at the best of times. And many people on bikes seem to like wearing "high viz" gear. But without bothering to use any lights.

IMO there is just no excuse for not using lights seeing that the quality and price has increased and decreased to such a level that even £20 will get you some stonking lights nowadays.

I run a Smart R1 1 Watt rear that cost me £6 and a Planet X Jobsworth Asterion USB 400 Lumen Rechargeable Front Light which is basically a Moon Meteor copy and I picked up for under a tenner.

Anyone else use lights all the time?

No: even here in deepest, darkest Scotland there is the odd hour of daylight, the rare glimpses of sunshine. Rejoice in natural light, I say!
Don't get me started on hi-viz during a sunny day! Harumph!

I use my lights as little as possible. If I'm in the car I immediately switch the sidelights on in order to dowse the DRLs and try to resist switching the dim-dips on until I absolutely need to. On the bike I use the streetlamps as a guide, if they're on, my lights are on. I really hate having lights shone in my face all the time, I find it dazzling and distracting.

There's one or two guys riding around east Leeds with their lights permanently on. Fair enough if they want to - but ......... I wouldn't bother. Their lights just aren't ... "noticeable" (?) enough in normal daylight, imho.

And I'm not at ALL sure of this business of "normalising" lights in the day. How long before it'll be nobody notices anything if it doesn't have the violently strong lights of the Audi/BMWs?

On a motorbike - different again; the rare occasions I ride, it's with lights on.

I tend to have a rear light on all the time, but only go to town with the front when it's streetlight time. Since my commutes at the moment are dawn/dusk then it's lights both ways ATM.

Bright clothing and lights on 100%, combination of flash and steady. I have noticed cars noticing me when filtering, so I don't see why not for cycle commuters in particular.

And I really don't like DRLs on cars or super bright modern headlights. Give it a few years once these these lights start to be badly adjusted or need replacing and owners realise the cost of the damn things.

If I set out in the dark then the rear lights stay on as I don't bother to switch them off. Front one I may switch off. Or I may not. Depends if I remember, or indeed care.

On long rides on short winter days I will be more frugal about switching them off, as I'll be worried that I have enough battery for when it gets dark at the end of the ride.
