I’m building a gravel bike going to go 1x 10

34 up front 11-42 on the rear

should I go long cage or medium rear derailleur

thanks in advance 👍

How much does it cost to Oldham?
That'll be a spinny gravel bike.
I'm on 36 x 11-40 on my mtb and that tops out waaaay too early for my liking.

But go long cage.

Thanks . We will see bit of fun see how it turns out
it was a hybrid running 3 x 9 , 34 middle up front I spent most of the time
on the 34 the 11 x 43 will give a bigger range as the previous I think was a 11 x 36

Changed the wheels ,gears ,ridged carbon forks, and some other carbon stuff
so it’s lighter now

Long cage

I run 1x9 at the moment. 34 by 11-34 on a hybrid for urban use only. I had 1x10 on a bike I sold in the summer which was 42 by 11-42 and for my use was too high.
Thanks ...looks like a long cage then . See not all derailleur go to a 42 what rear were you using

I’m running 34T front with a 11-36T cassette and a long cage XT derailleur; not sure if it’s absolutely necessary but it’s what I had when building my gravel project. And yes, it is a bit spinny but climbs OK. With a 42T max I’d be looking at a longer chainring.

I've got a Deore M610 rear derailleur on my MTB and am running it with a 46t cassette - I'm using a Sunrace Derailleur Hanger extender which gives the clearance for the cage to get onto the largest sprocket and it works well.
