I was essentially asking whether a pre-SIS mech would move the cage the correct precise distance given the amount of cable movement delivered by the shifters...but things have taken a slightly dog-legged turn (and not for the first time). I suddenly thought 'hang on a mo, I've got an old mech in the shed - maybe that has a barrel adjuster I can pinch - only to find I had two old mechs in the shed, one being another old - but post-SIS - 600. So I've swapped the mechs. At the moment I'm trying to figure out why the mech won't move over to the smallest sprocket, even with no cable tension at all. (And no, it's not the adjuster screws...I've loosened the relevant one off, way past the point where it makes any difference.) Do the springs lose their springiness? It would seem odd. It's not like it's proper old, and Shimano gear - especially high-end Shimano gear - has always proved bullet-proof in the past.if you mean will the SIS shifter on the handlebar work with the non SIS rear derailleur- yes it will as its the shifter on the bars that has the bit for moving the correct length of cable to shift the chain onto the relevant sprocket.
as others have posted that RD looks like it was not threaded, the brake adjusters might work .
can you not put the adjuster on the shifter on the bar ?
(It's one of these, in case it helps

Any inspirations more than welcome...
