It's really a question of semantics. I would argue that birds have come far enough down their evolutionary pathway to say that birds are birds. Does a statement like birds are dinosaurs help or hinder the general public's understanding of how evolution works.

The merging of birds with dinosaurs goes hand-in-hand with a tighter definition of avian dinosaurs. What's really being said is that birds are as close to dinosaurs as modern mammals are to ancient ones.

Isn't that the example distinguishing knowledge from wisdom? Knowledge is knowing tomatoes are fruit, but wisdom is not putting them in a fruit salad
