Are drivers from some places just more stupid?

Having just moved to UNI I would swear the driver's in Norwich/Norfolk are just stupider. I used to live in Woking in Surrey and had a few problems. Commuting to work in town was usually okay, specially as I worked Sundays. I work Sundays here and seem to have problems everytime.

When I worked during the week back home I'd cycle about 15 miles and most times I'd get someone overtake too close most days and things like that but some drivers in Norfolk just seem to be out to get cyclists.

Have you found certain areas to be less cycle friendly?

I don't think its as wide as whole counties, but whole cities can be worse than others.

Its surprising how different areas of the country develop different driving styles. The speciality of Hampshire seems to be the very optional use of indicators. At my mum and dad's in Lincolnshire the insane overtake is king (the A15 is like wacky races) while my London sis-in-law won't consider driving in anything other than the offside lane of any road, irrespective of speed or traffic conditions

Down in this little corner of the Country, me and Mrs-LC have decided there's something we call "South East Syndrome" which basically boils down to "my busy lifestyle makes me considerably more important than you and so I can do whatever the hell I like".

Sufferers apply that mantra whatever they are doing ..

Living in Wrexham at the moment, having done all my previous cycling in Brighton and the surrounding areas.
So far I would say that drivers in the country surrounding Wrexham are generally more patient and I've had far fewer close overtakes than on Sussex country lanes.
In Wrexham itself though I've had a couple of aggresive drivers already and I've only been commuting to uni by bike for about a week! The sheer number of roundabouts makes it a bit of a challenge and the fact that there aren't many cyclists who use the roads means I feel quite invisible!

It's very noticeable to me that the average French driver is much more considerate of cyclists than the average UK driver.

Interestingly, I was speaking to an ex-UK builder here some weeks ago and he was bitching big time about cyclists hogging the road (I presume he'd encountered a club run). I didn't mention I was a cyclist, that would have just made matters uncomfortable. I figure you can't take the UK out of the driver!

I cycle into London from Watford. I usually have no problems until I get to Wembley, where the standard of driving is terrible.

During the week I commute across the city twice a day, on Sunday I am either doing the club run or a lone leisure ride. I notice a big difference in the driving between those driving the lanes and those driving the streets, those on the lanes are much better usually. Has any one noticed that the time of day seems to affect driving standards? The morning commute starts at 6:20am and there aren't many about and they seem to drive better than those I encounter when I travel home, commute starts at 4pm. In the evening its different again.
